My Experience...

Want to know where I've been and what I've done? Or pehaps you want to know what makes me tick or what my interests are?

Then simply read on and learn for yourself...

THE BEGINNING...

Upon finishing my degree at Coventry University I was just a young gun waiting for my first break into the world of design - luckily for me I didn't have to wait long. There I was enjoying my degree show with an air of satisfaction, when I was approached by a member of the Audi Design Foundation and was asked if I would like to do some freelance design work. With two other graduates we were asked to create small booklets for school children, helping them to become more creative. This opportunity gave me firsthand experience of working for a client, I acquired a taste for more.

Not long after I helped to found a freelance design company with three other likeminded thinkers, and so Full Fat Creations was born. My fellow creatives, Chris Pinches (ChristopherPinches.co.uk) and Stephen Wood, whom I had worked closely with at university, began to whip up a design storm by "Waging War on Bad Design". We created the company from scratch to a fully functioning freelance agency, creating the branding and website, sourcing premises and attracting new clients. The majority of our work catered for small businesses, stretching over branding and website design.

PROPELLER COMMUNICATIONS...

Unfortunately due to mortgage payments and the day to day bills I had to look for full time income which led me to my next job, Propeller Communications. At Propeller I went from an up and coming designer to become one of their two senior creatives, working on a number of new brands and successful pitches coming into the business. The main clientele they attracted were Bars & Restaurants within the London Area, - these clients gave me the chance to create individual and original pieces of design and I began to develop a wide and varied portfolio of my own. Through Propeller I worked on projects for many important clients including Galvin at Windows, Youngs Brewery, Brains Brewery, Grants Whisky, Hendricks Gin, Monkey Shoulder, Marco Pierre White, Trader Vics, Beefeater Gin, Raynal Brandy and Waterloo Brasserie to name just a few. During my two years with Propeller I enhanced my design skills for the web and built up a good knowledge of Web Standards, CSS and SEO development.

NEXT...

After helping Propeller to grow from just a small business to a competitive design agency, I felt that it was time for a change of scenery, and a new challenge. At that time my main weakness was clean cut design, I had become so used to designing funky, dirty and worn sites, that I decided I needed to challenge my clean cut design skillz. So I applied for an in-house Creative Web Designer role at fashion retail Next, and as you can guess, was successful. I quickly fitted in working on numerous designs from Homepages, Landing pages, Editorial Spreads and Advertising. I was then asked to take a step up and become part of the project design team - with this opportunity I had the chance to self manage my time, project manage huge projects lasting weeks sometimes months from start to finish, worked closely with sites like Facebook & Twitter putting Next onto the social media map, designing their new international multi lingual site NextDirect.com, managing small teams of people assigned to help in my projects & train many of our new recruits as well as helping them settle into the business.

IN MY OWN TIME...
CSS Mastery...

Well where can I start, I could blab on all day about how interesting my life is but, instead I'll cut to my core hobbies. As with many men sport, football in particular is a favorite pastime of mine. I've played for numerous teams including Coventry University and Kenilworth Town. I also have a keen interest in running, unfortunately I'm one of those weird people who like it and complete several half marathons throughout the year, including the Great North Run and the Coventry Half Marathon.

Reading is also a strong passion of mine, it takes a great writer to keep you hooked from cover to cover. There are many authors I like to read, but if I had to pick two they would have to be J.R.R Tolkien and Bernard Cornwell, both of whom have a tremendous talent and I would love to able to match it one day with my own novel.

I also take a keen interest in our rapidly growing industry, it's hard to keep up with trends and new technologies but I find it a vital part of developing yourself as a designer, so I commit much of my spare time to grow my knowledge. I also like to keep my drawing skillz sharpened as any Joe Bloggs can use a computer, it takes skill to portray information in sketches that people can understand.

I love to have a grasp on other cultures, I try to travel as much as possible when money and time can afford. I find this is very important when designing, knowing other peoples environments and beliefs to better understand them, and cater for their needs.
